UPenn Medicine Summer Program
June 25 - July 21, 2023
My time at the UPenn medical summer program was an eye-opening experience, especially witnessing a live surgery that took an unexpected turn. Initially planned as a minimally invasive procedure to remove a single lobe of the right lung, the surgery shifted mid-way when the surgeons discovered more extensive infection, requiring an open surgery to remove two lobes. This adaptability in the operating room underscored the dynamic nature of healthcare. I was also inspired by Dr. Alexandra Miller’s talks on psychiatry, which emphasized the significance of diagnosing, preventing, and managing mental health conditions. Her insights led me to explore the impact of PTSD on war veterans and their children through a reflective essay.
